Prague City Council has approved a budget for refurbishment of Lesser Town Square. The city has allocated 73.5 million crowns for the construction works. Now, it is seeking a contractor. The project received a building permit last year. That means that preparations for a major overhaul of one of the most well-known squares have proceeded to the final stage. The transformation of the square should start this year. A budget has been approved for the Lesser Town Square revitalization project. The allocated amount of 73,500,000 excluding VAT will cover construction works, the cost of guarantees, and insurance. In the next step, a construction company will be selected in a public tender to be called by the Investment Department of Prague City Hall.
“The construction sector is able to create jobs even during crises. We can support the economy by reasonable, substantiated investments into improvements of the city infrastructure and public space. The refurbishment of the Lesser Town Square can be the first step,” says Petr Hlaváček, Prague's First Deputy Mayor.
The current state of the Lesser Town Square fails to reflect its significance. Heavy traffic prevents a smooth flow of pedestrians. The main aim of the refurbishment is a reduction of the traffic burden and an overall improvement of the space. The square should become an imposing public space, offering a place to meet and hold cultural and other events.
The project received a building permit last year. Construction works are expected to commence this year.
