Prague City Council has approved new street, terminal and park names

3/6/2025

At its meeting on the 17th of February 2025, the Prague City Council approved three important resolutions relating to urban development, transport infrastructure and the landmarking system in the city. Specifically, it concerns the naming of new streets and a park, the development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and the renaming of a key transport hub in Smíchov.

New names for Prague streets and park

One of the important points of the meeting was the approval of new names for streets and a park in different parts of the city. In total, there are 23 newly named streets and the King Alexander Park in Vysočany.

Many of the new streets bear the names of historically significant figures, such as Rosenbaum Street, named after Adolf Rosenbaum, co-founder of the Smíchov distillery. In Holyně, Hermanové and Fabiánové Streets have been added, referring to Czech actresses Ljuba Hermanová and Vlasta Fabiánová. In addition, names based on Celtic hillforts, such as Nevězická or Třísovská, appeared in several parts of the town.

The aim of these changes is not only to improve the orientation of residents and the integrated rescue system, but also to highlight the historical and cultural context of each location.

Change of the name of Smíchov Terminal

The second resolution concerns the change of the name of the "Smíchov Terminal" to "Nádraží Smíchov". This change will affect not only the newly built terminal itself, but also the metro station, tram and bus stops and all related signage in the area.

The reason for the change is to unify and simplify the orientation for passengers transferring between different modes of transport. The new name was proposed on the basis of a meeting of the City Hall Place Commission. The name "Nádraží Smíchov" has been recommended by the Prague City Hall's Location Commission, which recommended the use of a single name "Nádraží Smíchov" for all transport segments in the area in 2024.

Expansion of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles

The last of these resolutions concerns the construction of charging stations for electric vehicles on the streets of Prague within the parking lots and garages managed by the Technical Administration of Communications of the Capital City. This project is part of the Transport Programme 2021-2027, which finances the development of infrastructure for alternative fuels.

The aim is to build a modern and accessible network of charging stations that will support environmentally friendly transport in the city. The project will be implemented in phases and its sustainability will be cross-sectionally evaluated and monitored until 2028.

All three resolutions have a common goal: to improve the orientation of Prague's residents and visitors, develop green infrastructure and adapt the urban space to modern requirements. Whether it is naming new streets, building charging stations for electric cars or renaming an important transport hub, all of these steps are aimed at a modern, efficient and environmentally sustainable Prague.
