Comprehensive revitalization of the lower part of Wenceslas Square to be completed by the end of 2021

11/11/2019

The revitalization of the bottom part of Wenceslas Square is to commence next spring. The city has already selected the winner of a public tender. Prague citizens can look forward to a completely redesigned, modern public space with a performance area, tree lines and pavements. The area will also be ready for a possible construction of a tram track in the future. The construction works in the lower part of Wenceslas Square are expected to be completed by the end of 2021

The purpose of the revitalization is to address some of the long-standing issues in this key part of the city.  The concept was selected in an architectural competition in 2005. The aim is to completely redesign the area to meet urban-design and architecture requirements, including relocation of underground water, gas and electricity lines.

The central section of the square will be free, ready to host seasonal fairs and other events. The area will also be ready for a possible construction of a tram track in the future. Each side of the square will be lined with extended pavements with a double line of trees, complete with water drainage elements.

The winner of the public tender is Hochtief CZ with a bidding price of approximately CZK 270 million VAT excl. The Prague City Council selected the winner at its session last Monday.
