Štvanice footbridge is about to be completed, should be ready before summer

The construction of a footbridge connecting Holešovice with Karlín via the island of Štvanice has reached the final stage. Skanska’s bridge building experts are placing the last concrete segments near the Holešovice bank, before joining them permanently and finishing the structure. The 300-meter bridge will open to pedestrians and cyclists in early summer.

Two Prague’s districts will soon get a better connection. Dozens of experts with experience in bridge construction from Sweden and Norway have been working on the site, using heavy ground machinery as well as several tugboats and multiple floating pontoons.

The architect of the project was selected by the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) in a competition.

The construction of the 300 meters long white concrete structure designed by Petr Tej and Marek Blank began in January 2022. Its segments have been produced with millimeter accuracy in a panel factory in Štětí to be trucked and shipped to the construction site. Walking width is four meters, an off-ramp to Štvanice island is three meters wide. The bridge will be illuminated by LED strips built in the handrail to minimize light pollution. The last span of the bridge at the Holešovice side can be raised to withstand a millennium flood.
