The Prague City Council has called for preliminary consultations on a project that should revive the former Orionka tram yard compound. The facility should undergo a partial renovation for its new use. Unused buildings in the Královské Vinohrady Tram Yard are to be repaired and might host an arts and community center, a café, studios and other public facilities in the future. Based on the the preliminary consultations, the city will determine how realistic these plans are. Suggestions are accepted by May 31, 12:00.
The site of the former Královské Vinohrady Tram Yard, or Orionka, is located in the wider city center, on the verge of Prague 10 and Prague 3 districts. Prague City Council envisages that after partial redevelopment, the site would host a café, art studios, facilities for cultural and community events, and a children’s playground. “The project envisages that the compound remain in Prague’s hands and serve Prague citizens. We want to carry out the transformation together with the private sector, which is why we decided to call for the preliminary market consultations and search for the best options,” says City Councilor Jan Chabr who is responsible for Prague’s asset management. “The fundamental principle of the project will be preserving the site’s authenticity - that means that the outside walls or the roof construction system should not be affected. These may only be repaired and renovated to restore their original look,” concludes Councilor Jan Chabr.
Orionka should become a multifunctional center for Prague citizens, bringing together different social groups, in particular providing opportunities for daily leisure time for children, youth and the general public alike. The transformation of the site should also focus on fostering creative industries.
