Construction of nearly 10,000 new flats started in Prague last year.

2/7/2022

The Czech Statistical Office today published statistical data about housing construction in 2021. The results are very positive for Prague, as the total number of flats whose construction started last year, was 9,698, which is the highest number since 2000. Construction of 8,283 flats in new residential buildings started last year. The previous record number was 6,843 in 2005.

The results stem from various positive factors, in particular the launch of new construction in large brownfields across Prague, such as Smíchov Railway Station, Rohan Island, and Žižkov Freight Station. That means major construction projects that will run for many years. Prague has also managed to defend its own regulations in the new Building Act and has been preparing a new zoning plan (the so-called Metropolitan Plan). The city needs the rules for construction activities to be simple, understandable, and adjusted to the city’s specific situation. The procedure for making amendments to the zoning plan has been accelerated significantly, on average from 981 days to 270 days, which has resulted in noticeably faster construction of new residential projects.
