Prague to select a company to manage built-in facilities in the arches of Negrelli Viaduct. Quality and content to be the primary factors

Prague is planning to build a new rest zone under Negrelli Viaduct in Karlín district in the coming years. The viaduct’s approximately forty arches are to accommodate various commercial and creative activities and some start-up companies. The tenants will be selected by a special committee.

“With this project, Prague will join other modern European cities in smart utilization of the public space and its elements. The arches have an interesting history - with the rise of automobilism in the early 20th century, they were boarded up and used as garages. Today, they will find a purpose much more attractive for Prague citizens, with a wide range of commercial facilities. Due to the unique nature of the location, we agreed to choose tenants not only by the amount of rent they are willing to pay but also by the type and quality of the content. They will be selected by a jury whose members will recruit from a variety of organizations, ranging from the City of Prague and Prague 8 district council to architects who have been involved in the project from its onset. I am really looking forward to being able to come over for a coffee or a beer and visit other interesting facilities,” says City Councilor Jan Chabr who is in charge of municipal asset management.

Prague City Council has made another step towards revitalization of the entire location on the territory of Karlín district by approving the operating principles for facilities built in the arches of Negrelli Viaduct. A 2019 concept envisages approximately 40 such facilities to emerge over the next few years.
