Rent hikes in municipal flats will not apply to vulnerable tenants

Prague Councilors have agreed not to increase the rent for current tenants in municipal flats. The city is taking into consideration the situation of vulnerable groups in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is why it has refrained from hiking the rent for them for the time being. Other tenants will still enjoy highly favorable conditions, paying approximately a half of the market rent. The city expects the increase of the rent to generate funds for refurbishment projects and new housing construction.

Monday’s decision by the City Council will unify the rent for tenants with new contracts at 164 CZK/m² in the city center and 132 CZK/m² elsewhere, including a discount scheme for low-income households. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rent adjustment will not apply to the most vulnerable groups of tenants, such as people with disabilities living in special-purpose fats, elderly people, and low-income families. Rents will be adjusted every two years as part of contract renewal.
