A new concept to improve coordination of planned projects in Baba estate and improve the living conditions for local inhabitants

Functionalist Baba estate is to enjoy better protection against uncoordinated changes. Prague City Council has asked the Planning and Development Institute (IPR) to appoint a team that will create a new concept for future development of the site. The concept will focus primarily on improvement of public spaces and preserving the historic value of the site.

From the urban development and public space perspective, Baba estate is a stabilized site. However, even stabilized areas may need to address certain issues from time to time. Baba is struggling with deteriorated and inconveniently placed underground installations, including sewage, water, and gas pipes. Repairs of pavements and roads have been underway.

In 2017, Baba joined the “Experimental Werkbund Estates in Europe 1927-1932” project in which cities strive to receive the European Heritage Label. The project is aimed primarily at raising awareness of this site while offering an opportunity to improve its public space. Prague received the European Heritage Label at the end of March 2020.  Until now, repairs and refurbishments have not been coordinated.

The new concept document should introduce a unified approach to the site and ensure that existing concurrent projects can be combined and coordinated for greater cost effectiveness. Another key aspect will be an involvement of landscape architects and monument preservation experts whose task will be to propose such improvements of the site that would not undermine its historic value.
