The Prague City Council has taken another important step in the implementation of the Hydropolis Water Education Centre project. At its meeting on 24 February 2025, it approved the Agreement on the Conditions of Construction with the Prague Water Management Company (PWMC), which will allow construction work to continue before the property settlement of the land is completed.
The Hydropolis project is being built on the historic Vinohrady Waterworks site, which will be completely revitalized and opened to the public. The outreach centre will offer several key elements:
- A water park with play and water features for relaxation and recreation.
- Interactive displays in the water reservoir and water tower
- A conference hall for seminars and cultural and social events
- Viewing point from the roof of the water tower
- Café and meeting area
According to a resolution of the Prague City Council, construction work on the project started in December 2024, but due to recent changes to the building permit (the change was not issued until 20 September 2024), it was necessary to adjust the extent of the land to be transferred. In order to implement the project, PWMC must acquire approximately 156 m² more land from the capital city than originally planned.
The explanatory memorandum also shows that the existing substation building, which will be physically relocated and deleted from the land register before the amendment to the purchase agreement is concluded, will not be the subject of the transfer to PWMC.
The City of Prague, Prague Water Management Company, Prague Waterworks and Sewerage and Veolia Group are cooperating on the Hydropolis project. The total cost of implementation is estimated at approximately CZK 450 million, with Veolia providing CZK 100 million for the design, development and implementation of the exhibition section.
The Hydropolis will become an important part of education on water management topics and an important project that brings water management to the general public.
