The Prague City Council discussed the results of the New Centre Hostivař urban planning competition

2/17/2025

At its meeting on 14 January 2025, the Prague City Council discussed the results of the urban planning competition for the New Hostivař Centre. It approved the jury's proposal for the announcement of the winner and ordered the Institute of Planning and Development of the City of Prague (IPR) together with other partners to complete the urban study based on the winning concept. At the same time, the Prague 15 municipal district was entrusted with cooperation in the creation of the new City Hall, which is a key part of the project.

Competition process and assignment
The urban design competition was announced in September 2023 as a non-anonymous two-phase workshop. The aim was to find an optimal design for the new Hostivař centre that would respect the local context and the needs of the residents, while bringing a modern and sustainable approach to the development of the area. The key points of the assignment were the creation of an urban study with regulatory elements and the design of the new headquarters of the Prague 15 district.

From a total of 24 submitted teams, five participants were selected for the first phase based on their portfolios. During this phase, the competitors had the opportunity to present their concepts to an expert jury and receive valuable feedback. The two best teams then moved on to the second phase, where they further developed their proposals according to the jury's comments.

The winning design

The winning design comes from team 11, which consists of UNIT architects, A69 - architects, Ateliér DUA, Land05 and ONplan lab. This team impressed the jury with their ability to harmoniously combine the functional and aesthetic elements of the design with respect to the needs of the residents and sustainable development. The design includes public spaces, new buildings for amenities and better connections to the transport infrastructure. The jury particularly appreciated the quality of the urban design, which takes into account ecological principles and involves the community in the planning process.

Next steps

The winning proposal will now be refined into an urban design study, which will include regulatory elements, and will then serve as the basis for the implementation of the project. Prague 15 will be actively involved in the architectural study of its new office, which will be part of this transformation.

The urban design competition for the New Hostivař Centre represents another step towards modern and sustainable development of Prague's districts. The winning design promises not only a visually attractive transformation of Hostivař, but also an improvement in the quality of life of its inhabitants.
