Prague Transport Company plans further development of tram lines

1/20/2025

This year and next year, the Prague Transport Company (DPP) will embark on several major projects aimed at expanding the tram network in the metropolis. Key projects include the construction of a line to Malešice, the connection of tracks on Wenceslas Square to Vinohradská Street and the launch of three more lines in 2026, including those to Strahov, Nové Dvory and the new district of Žižkov.

The new tram line in Malešice will run through the centre of Počernická Street and will connect Vinohradská Street with a new turning point at the Malešice Residential Estate stop. The line will be 2.3 kilometres long and six stops with working names such as Hagibor, Na Palouku or Hostýnská will be built along the line. The cost of this project is estimated at CZK 1.75 billion excluding VAT and DPP is currently looking for a construction company for the implementation. Another project to be launched this spring is the connection of Wenceslas Square with Vinohradská Street. The tracks will cross the main thoroughfare in Legerova Street.

Construction of three more lines is planned to start next year. The first of them will lead from Libuše to Nové Dvory, where an important interchange will be created thanks to the metro station D. DPP expects that the construction of this line, 2 km long, will begin in 2026 and the cost will amount to approximately CZK 1.4 billion. The line will also connect Malovanka with Strahov. This 1.3 km long line is already in the stage of preparation for public procurement and its construction should also start in 2026. The third project concerns a new district on the land of the former Žižkov freight station. The line will run from the intersection of Jana Želivského and Olšanská streets to Sídliště Jarov. The length of this line will be approximately two kilometres and its aim is to provide better transport services to the developing area.
