On 16 December last year, the Prague City Council approved the project plan "Architectural Manual of Prague Cemeteries" (AMPH), which aims to document and promote funerary architecture in Prague.
The project is part of the National Restoration Plan and its funding is provided by the Ministry of Culture. The estimated budget is CZK 1.1 million, with 86% of the costs covered by the grant and the rest by the Cemeteries and Funeral Services of the Capital City of Prague. The amount of the grant is paid by the City of Prague.
The main output of the project will be a bilingual online database of 80 important tombstones, tombs and chapels in Olšany Cemetery. In addition, an illustrated map guide will be created and excursions and lectures will be organised. The aim is not only to make the artistic and historical values of the cemeteries more accessible, but also to attract a new type of culturally oriented visitors.
The project highlights cemeteries as "open-air museums" and offers a new perspective on their significance. If the grant is approved, implementation will begin in January 2025 and last for one year. This project is another step towards the protection and popularisation of Czech cultural heritage.
