Blue-green infrastructure in the Hybernská Campus will improve the climate and improve the courtyard area

6/28/2024

Prague city councillors on Monday approved an application for support for a blue-green infrastructure investment project at the Hybernská Campus. The aim of the planned revitalisation of the courtyard is to capture rainwater from the roofs of the buildings and accumulate it for further use. At the same time, the campus area will be made more attractive while preserving its educational potential. The estimated cost is almost CZK 30 million and half of it will be covered by programmes of the Ministry of Regional Development of the Czech Republic, half will be paid by the capital city from its own resources.

The inner block at Hybernská 4 is used by the general public for the purpose of non-commercial cultural and creative events and community events. Now, thanks to its innovative approach to the transformation of the urban environment, it can become a leading example of the integration of modern ecological technologies and sustainability principles in urban planning and design.
The planned project combines elements such as green roofs, vertical gardens and rainwater capture and use systems. These components aesthetically enrich the campus and actively contribute to improving the urban microclimate, increasing biodiversity and creating a healthier and more sustainable environment. It will also improve the aesthetics and visual appearance of the campus and the well-being of its visitors. Last but not least, this model will serve as an inspiration for similar projects. The significance of the project goes beyond aesthetic and environmental benefits; it is a key element in the fight against urban problems such as heat islands, flooding and soil erosion. The 35 m3 storage space can manage water for the next 28 days without rainfall. In the event of heavy rainfall lasting 6 hours (5-year rainfall), the 81.5 m3 retention basins ensure a regulated drainage of excess water.
The estimated total investment costs of the Blue-Green Infrastructure in the Hybernská Campus amount to CZK 29,846,301 excluding VAT. Half of the costs are covered by the capital city from its own resources, the other half is financed by the Ministry for Regional Development of the Czech Republic from the Integrated Regional Operational Programme 2021-2027.
The building complex at Hybernská 4 is filled by the activities of two cooperating entities - the City of Prague and the registered institute Kampus Hybernská, which was established jointly by the City of Prague and the Ministry of Regional Development. Prague and Charles University. The cooperating entities focus on cultural, creative and community events for the general public, such as concerts, theatre, readings, exhibitions and festivals.
