Prague has long suffered from a shortage of rental housing. However, the construction of new flats has been hampered by lengthy administrative procedures to approve new projects. The new city administration is therefore trying to find other ways to satisfy the housing needs of the residents and is taking steps that could at least partially alleviate the situation. The city is now trying to acquire a part of a post office building in Moravská Street in Prague 2, which the company is disposing of as part of its restructuring.

Czech Post will be closing 35 of its 106 branches in Prague. The City of Prague sees this as an extraordinary opportunity to acquire real estate that could be used to expand municipal rental housing capacities. The first such project could be the purchase of part of the building in Moravská Street, which could be converted into multiple apartments in the future. Prague is now assessing other suitable properties for purchase together with the Czech Post and compiling a list of them.
