Prague wants to take over management of Vrchlického Sady Park outside the Main Station

1/7/2022

Prague City Council discussed taking over administration of the area of Vrchlického Sady Park in the New Town from the Prague 1 district. The city aims to implement its long-term plan to renovate the entire area, including the construction of a new tram line that will bring public transport straight to the Main Station. In exchange, Prague councilors agreed to transfer the area of Havel Market in the Old Town to the Prague 1 district. Both transactions are expected to be approved at the January session of the City Assembly.

Upon request by the Prague 1 local authority, the city will initiate a process of transferring control over the Havel Market area in the Old Town to the hands of Prague 1 as a compensation. In addition to the market itself, the land in question includes also surrounding greenery with a pavement and a parking area. However, this will only happen on the condition that Prague 1 will not be entitled to transfer the land or parts thereof to another natural or legal person, and the city district will also be obliged to maintain the existing use of the area where a marketplace has a long tradition.

The plan to swap the land with Prague 1 was approved last autumn by the Property Commission of the Prague City Council.
