Prague councilors approve allocation of municipal flats for people in social distress for 2022

12/13/2021

The Prague City Council approved the method of allocating municipal flats for citizens in social distress until the end of 2022. By renting city-owned flats to people in social distress, Prague helps alleviate a difficult life situation for several hundred Prague residents. The ruling coalition has also pledged that no child or senior citizen in Prague will have to live in a hostel or a temporary shelter. This was one of the reasons why the city drew up a policy for renting municipal flats to different types of vulnerable households for 2022.

By the end of 2022, the city will be able to rent approximately 100 small flats, 75 medium-sized flats and 75 large-area flats for social housing purposes. These include not only flats managed by Prague, but also those whose refurbishment was financed from the Affordable Housing Development Fund and now are managed by respective city districts.

Prague owns 7,266 flats in total. About 750 of them are allocated for senior citizens and nearly 500 are apartments for people with disabilities. 1574 municipal flats are reserved for key professionals and approximately 670 are rented under a social housing scheme. The remaining tenants to whom the city rented its flats in the past do not belong to any of these target groups.
