Prague improves greenery management. All data to be gathered in one place

11/15/2021

Dozens of operators take care of greenery in the capital. They collect data in their own respective siloed databases. That is why the city districts will newly hand over key information to a central system managed by the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR). The city will be able to coordinate city-wide projects more effectively and increase its resilience to climate change. The data will also be freely available to the public.

A systematic care of municipal greenery is a vital part of the city’s environmental management. The City Hall, the Road Administration Authority and the Institute of Planning and Development have therefore agreed to create a central system to share data about greenery. The system will collect data about trees, green areas and watercourses. For instance, data about trees will include not just the location and species, but also the main characteristics.

City districts, which share responsibility for greenery on their respective territories, will be key partners for data collection. For instance, the Municipal Forest Administration will also join the initiative. All bodies involved process gather similar information in their respective greenery databases. However, the technology solutions vary considerably, and in some cases, databases are managed by contractors. The central system will aggregate shared data that are needed to solve city-wide issues.

The project has been approved by the city council. The first basic application is scheduled for launch in February next year. City districts and organizations will join the system in several stages and will be responsible for regular updates.
