Prague is repairing unique rotunda of the Holy Cross in the Old Town

11/3/2021

The Romanesque rotunda at the intersection of Karoliny Světlé and Konviktská streets in Prague 1 will undergo a major renovation. This autumn, construction works commenced to replace the roof and repair other related parts of the building. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of May 2022.

“The capital city has been restoring its property, which was often neglected. In this particular case, we are taking a particularly sensitive approach as the rotunda of the Holy Cross, which is a historic monument, deserves great respect. This inconspicuous gem needs proper care to stay in the very center of the city for centuries to come,” says City Councilor Jan Chabr who oversees municipal asset management.

Having obtained a construction permit, the city, which owns the rotunda, called a public tender to find a contractor for the renovation. A contractor from Gema Art Group was selected in August this year. Subsequently, the city agreed with the Czech Old Catholic Church, which uses the building for religious purposes, to let the construction works start.

There have been no complications so far and the project is expected to be completed by the end of May 2022.
