Councillor Jan Chabr is drawing up a motion for the Prague City Council to terminate contracts with certain shops in the city centre that he believes damage Prague’s good reputation. The motion specifically mentions a bureau de change in Železná Street and Chabr says others will follow.
“The City commissioned an analysis of contracts made by its own Trade Centre Praha a.s. and moved to terminate selected lease contracts, in particular with bureaux de change and souvenir shops,” says Jan Chabr, a member of the Prague City Council responsible for municipal asset management.
Not all such outlets are going to be affected, though. Some sell stylish goods, some promote young Czech artists, and some have kept a traditional range of goods, such as original Czech china, for decades. Lease contracts with such shops are not going to be terminated.
„Transparency and a fight against dubious downtown vendors that blemish the city centre are among the priorities of our election manifesto. I welcome Councillor Chabr’s initiative to terminate the lease contract with the bureau de change in Železná Street. It is the first step and others are to follow,” says MEP Jiří Pospíšil, a member of the Prague City Assembly.
