Revitalisation of Charles Square

3/10/2025

Karlovo náměstí, one of the largest and most important squares in Prague, will soon undergo extensive revitalization. The capital city is planning extensive renovations to restore this historic space to its former beauty while adapting it to the needs of a modern city. The revitalization project will not only include aesthetic improvements, but also improve the traffic situation and create a more pleasant environment for residents and visitors.

Charles Square, originally called the Cattle Market, was founded in 1348 by Charles IV as part of the New Town of Prague. The square served as a marketplace for cattle and other goods and over time became an important social and commercial centre. In the 19th century the square was renamed in honour of its founder and underwent a significant transformation.

Today, Charles Square is an important Prague transport hub and a popular meeting and relaxation place. However, its current appearance no longer meets the modern requirements for public space, so the city decided to revitalise it.

According to the information published on the official website of Prague (praha.eu), the city plans to announce a public tender for preliminary works related to the revitalisation of Charles Square. These works include the preparation of the area for subsequent construction works, including archaeological surveys and temporary traffic arrangements.

Petr Hlaváček, Deputy Mayor for Territorial and Strategic Development, says of the upcoming work, "Thanks to this advance work, we are a little closer to the total transformation of the square, which could begin as early as 2027. In order to keep the park passable and user-friendly, the advance works will be divided into two phases. It will start during the dormant season, i.e. in autumn this year. There will only be a slight noise and dust restriction for the public, but there will be no major encroachment in the park and the pavements will remain passable. The success of the revitalisation of the park does not depend only on the quality of the architectural and landscape design of the park, but equally on the quality of future management and good care. Therefore, we consider it crucial that the capital city creates a tool that will enable it to set up good management and care for the park and to monitor and control its quality in the long term."

The revitalisation of Charles Square will have a significant impact on the traffic situation in the centre of Prague. During the works, there will be temporary traffic restrictions, which should be coordinated to minimise the impact on the daily life of residents and visitors. Once the revitalisation is completed, pedestrian zones and cycle paths should be better connected, which will contribute to the attractiveness of the whole area.

The contract will be in the amount of CZK 9,681,208 (VAT excluded). Due to other planned contracts, the contract was announced in the form of an open procedure with over-limits, and the Prague 2 municipal district and the relevant municipal departments for environmental protection and monument care agreed to the work.

"There is no doubt that Charles Square deserves quality and thoughtful care. For me, it was essential that the existing mature trees be protected and maintained. It is our common goal to ensure that the trees are in the best possible condition before the actual reconstruction begins," says Jana Komrsková, Deputy Minister for the Environment and Climate Plan.

Charles Square is one of Prague's most important historic spaces and its revitalisation is an important step towards preserving its heritage for future generations. With the planned changes, the square will become a modern and functional public space that will serve not only Prague residents but also visitors from all over the world. The implementation of the project will require the coordination of many components, but the result should benefit the entire city.
