On Monday 16 December 2024, a significant step was taken for the future of Žižkov Freight Station. Representatives of Prague and Czech Railways signed a purchase agreement for the functionalist railway station and the surrounding land. The transaction price was set at CZK 1.43 billion. This agreement paves the way for the transformation of this historic site into a modern urban district.
The plan foresees that the historic station building from 1936 will find a new use as a social and cultural centre. The project would also include a campus. "The building is unique because of its length, which corresponds to approximately half of Wenceslas Square," said Deputy Mayor Petr Hlaváček. The proposal for the purchase was approved by Prague city councillors last week and subsequently approved by the city councillors.
The project to transform the site promises to create a modern district with thousands of new apartments, shops, restaurants and public spaces. The use of the Žižkov Freight Station is intended to be an example of combining history and modern architecture. The entire transformation should respect the character of the place and preserve a significant part of the historic building.
This step is the result of many years of preparation and negotiations that led to the acquisition of the building by the city. The signing of the contract opens the door to the realisation of a project of fundamental importance for the development of Prague and the life of its inhabitants.
