Prague presents new shape of Wenceslas Square - a return of trams and more trees

10/21/2019

Prague City Councilors have approved an updated plan for Wenceslas Square transformation. The new plan foresees a tram track in the upper pat of the square and a pedestrian promenade in the middle. It also includes wider pavements, a new line of trees, a separate biking lane, and fewer parking places. Prague Institute of Planning and Development has been involved in updating the design.

Prague has had plans for Wenceslas Square redesign since 2005. The winning design jointly authored by Jakub Cigler Architekti (formerly Cigler Marani Architects ) and Atelier DUA was selected in an urban design and architecture competition. The section of the plan dealing with the upper part of the square has now been updated and the project is getting closer to implementation.

The Prague Public Transport Authority has appointed the general planner to draw up documentation for the tram line construction. The planner will coordinate all steps with the designers of the project. The next step will be to appoint the chief project engineer who will be responsible for technical coordination with all investors involved and their respective designers. Prague Institute of Planning and Development will supervise the overall quality of the implementation and the construction of the tram tracks. Construction works could start in 2022.
