At its session on Monday, the Prague City Council approved a phased modernization of the Strahov Tunnel over the next ten years. A total of approximately CZK 6 billion should be invested in the tunnel by the end of 2033. The tunnel technology, drainage shafts, roadway, and traffic safety measures, as well as a public emergency shelter will all be modernized.

The Strahov Road Tunnel was opened in 1997, but its design dates back to the 1980s. In 2002, five years after its opening, it was rated the ninth safest tunnel in Europe out of 30 tested by the FIA (International Automobile Federation).
