Prague City Assembly approves property swaps with the state. Prague has an opportunity to save the Karlín Barracks

4/27/2023

At its session on Thursday, the Prague City Assembly agreed to a swap of real estate between the capital city and the Czech Republic as previously approved by the City Council. Under the agreement, Prague will transfer real estate on the premises of the Bulovka University Hospital to the state, receiving the Karlín Barracks, property in the Lesser Town and in Hybernská Street, the premises of TJ Sokol Praha Královské Vinohrady, and other assets in exchange.

The approval by the City Assembly has concluded long and difficult negotiations on the property swap between the capital city and the Czech Republic, namely its Office for Government Representation in Property Affairs.

“Prague’s enormous effort to acquire key assets from the state has come to a successful end today after several years. The city is acquiring the Karlín Barracks, among other real estate. I am happy that we will now be able to start renovating this important site and breathe new life into its abandoned parts. The premises could once host a science and technology park, for instance. However, our property swap negotiations with the state do not end there. We would like to acquire the Veleslavín Castle and reach an agreement on the construction of affordable housing on land currently owned by the state, for example in the Bohdalec area,” says Adam Zábranský, Prague City Councilor for Property, Transparency, and Legislation.

Prague is seeking to acquire land in the Bohdalec district and has been negotiating with the Czech Ministry of Finance to build affordable housing there.
