Prague Councilors have approved a financial contribution to Prague 3 district administration to build the House of Dance by converting the decaying building of the former Municipal Spa in Žižkov. The new cultural and creative center will focus mainly on dance and other physical activities. Prague will spend almost 24 million crowns on preparations of the project.

Prague lacks a public multifunctional cultural institution to offer dancers and other artists appropriate facilities. Dance and other dynamic disciplines have been gaining traction lately, but due to the developments after 1989 there is no public-funded organization to support them. That is why the Prague 3 district is preparing a project that will turn the dilapidated buildings of the former Municipal Spa into the House of Dance.

“Prague has lacked a cultural center of this kind, so the city’s financial support goes to a good and desirable cause. The center will undoubtedly serve many Prague citizens. In addition, the decaying spa building will be renovated,” says Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda.

The project is now in the design phase. Prague would like to obtain a building permit and select a contractor for the construction this year to be able to launch the construction next. The building could be finished, approved, and open for trial operation the following year. The total cost is 275 million crowns, about two-thirds of which, 188 million crowns, will be covered from European funds and the rest will be financed by Prague and Prague 3 district. The European money must be invested by the end of 2025.
