Prague is about to send 10 million crowns worth of humanitarian aid to Ukraine

2/24/2022

Members of the Prague City Assembly approved an immediate financial donation of CZK 10 million to Czech humanitarian organization People in Need as aid for Ukrainian people, who became a victim of an armed invasion by Russia. This is the first immediate response to the situation, which will be followed by the establishment of a working group at the Prague Council, comprising representatives of all coalition and opposition parties. The group will coordinate Prague’s further steps with government ministries.

In a resolution adopted on Thursday, the Prague City Assembly expressed the capital city’s explicit support for and solidarity with Ukraine. At the same time, it condemned the military attack by Russia. Based on the same resolution, the City of Prague will also provide a financial donation of CZK 10 million as humanitarian aid in the region.

The city will donate the amount to People in Need, a recognized non-profit organization which has been delivering humanitarian aid to Ukraine (in particular the Donetsk and Luhansk regions) since 2014 through its SOS Ukraine fund and is now readying humanitarian aid in response to the current situation. The organization provides food, water, personal care products, coal, and psychosocial support to those in need, and helps repair homes and water pipes.

By decision of the City Assembly, the City Council will set up a working group to suggest next steps in providing aid to Ukraine.  The Mayor of Prague will also hold talks with the Czech Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other state bodies about other possible ways Prague could join humanitarian aid and other initiatives to support Ukraine, such as providing shelter to Ukrainian citizens and Ukrainian families with children. The Council will also consider terminating Prague’s partnership agreements with Moscow and St. Petersburg which have been suspended for the time being.
