Prague to build a new branch of the Municipal Library after thirteen years. The new facility will be located in Petřiny district

2/4/2022

The Municipal Library in Prague (MKP) is about to launch the construction of a new multifunctional building in Petřiny district. It will replace the existing building, whose technical condition does not allow for further development or refurbishment. After thirteen years, Prague citizens will have a new modern center of literature, art, and social events. The project is expected to cost approximately CZK 226 million including VAT, and should be completed in autumn 2023.

The new building in Prague 6 will replace the existing library dating from the 1950s, which was no longer fit for its purpose. That was the reason why the Petřiny branch was closed in October 2021. The new building is designed to meet both staff requirements and client expectations regarding modern library services.

The building permit was issued in mid-2021 and a two-round public tender procedure for the contractor was completed on 26 January 2022. The tender committee selected the bid submitted by a consortium of Subterra - Chládek & Tintěra as the best offer. The total amount of the investment is estimated at CZK 226 million including VAT. The construction site should be handed over to the contractor in March 2022. The project will start by pulling down the existing library building. The construction will then take thirteen months and the new library should open in the fall of 2023.
