Six parks around Prague have been fitted with smart lighting that can adjust the intensity and communicate remotely with a control center. The lighting was installed by Prague’s THMP technical service company which has been responsible for streetlights in the capital city for three years. The parks concerned include Ladronka, Fidlovačka, Jezerka, Bezručovy sady, Chotkovy sady, and Riegrovy sady.

So called dynamic light control in the parks enables THMP to communicate with each lamp individually directly from its control center or from any location using special software.

Controllers will define when each lamp is to turn on and off and how the light intensity should be adjusted throughout the night. This allows us to finely tune the amount of light to keep illumination at the lowest level at off-peak times that will still ensure safety of passersby,” explains City Councilor Jan Chabr who is responsible for municipal asset management.

THMP board chairman Tomáš Jílek said the new lamps are even able to report their own failure.

New LED lamps with flat glass have been used as they provide better illumination of the pavement without shining sideways. The aim was to ensure that the luminous flux is directed primarily on the pavement and close vicinity and to eliminate illumination of green areas further away as much as possible. The city also wanted to make sure that light intensity transitions are smooth and unobtrusive for visitors to the parks.
