Prague makes another step to improve accessibility of housing, approves Municipal Home Rental Agency concept

5/3/2021

After more than six months of preparations, the Prague City Council has approved a concept for the Municipal Home Rental Agency (MNA). This is another important step to help alleviate the difficult housing situation in the capital city faced by families with children, lone parents, senior citizens, handicapped people and people who find themselves in housing emergency. MNA offers an opportunity to landlords to work with the city on a long-term basis and provide their vacant apartments for housing with a social dimension.

Prague will rent apartments included in the MNA program primarily to families with children that have applied for municipal social housing or that live in temporary shelters and asylums. The new service will be unique by the speed with which it will be able to provide help to those in need. This is due to the fact that in the first phase, it will be operated by Prague’s Social Services Center that provides field assistance, health care and accommodation to Prague citizens who find themselves in difficult life or social situation. The Center therefore sees the MNA as a positive and much needed step to expand its services.

The Municipal Home Rental Agency is one of the tools the city has been adopting to improve the availability of housing in Prague under the “MHMP - Social Housing” project whose objective is to build an integrated system for housing emergency resolution. The establishment of the Municipal Home Rental Agency as well as the entire project is supported by the European Social Fund.
